VO2max Assessment

Gold standard measurement of aerobic capacity & health & longevity

The determination of maximal oxygen uptake or VO2max is the gold standard measure of aerobic capacity and cardiovascular fitness which correlated with fitness and exercise performance. While high scores correlate with increased performance, lower scores correlate with poorer cardiovascular health. This test will allow athletes to monitor the effectiveness of training and improvement of oxygen uptake.

​VO2max & Longevity 

A 2018 study of 5,000 middle-aged men found that those with the top 5% of VO2 max lived almost five years longer than those in the bottom 5%. Another study found that low VO2max levels was linked to a 21% increase in mortality rates during 45 years of follow-up

Lactate Threshold Assessment

The lactate threshold  is the best predictor of endurance performance 

This assessment allows us to measure your lactate threshold and provide an estimation of Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS) in a professional and relaxed environment. The running speed or the power output are strong predictors of fitness and performance. Well-trained marathon runners operate at a running velocity just above their lactate threshold value for the duration of the race.

The test can be carried out on a treadmill or a bicycle. Needle prick to the fingertip blood samples will be required to measure blood lactate concentration. Inspired and expired air will be analysed throughout the test by using a face mask.

Aerobic Fitness Assessment

The aerobic fitness assessment investigates the overall fitness level by assessing both your Lactate Threshold and VO2max with protocols specific to your sport and fitness level. We will acquire data on the metabolic profile and produce specific heart rate training zones for improving performance or for weight loss, depending on individual goals. This assessment also provides pulmonary gas exchange data that allows us to calculate energy expenditure (calories required) and substrate utilisation (amount of macronutrient used: i.e fat/ carbohydrate).

Fatigue profiling and Fatiguing Athlete testing 

Tired and you don't understand why?

​General tiredness is an everyday part of life. Fatigue is a more long-term issue with the feeling of constant exhaustion, burnout and lack of energy. Indeed, there is often a lack of motivation and chronic fatigue to consider. This issue can feed into our ability to exercise and interfere with sporting performance resulting in overtraining syndrome.

At 25 Harley Street we will run a series of bloods that will highlight any fundamental issues, should these be present. These include Full Blood Count (FBC), CRP (inflammation), Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12, as well as other key fatigue markers.

In addition, this in-depth blood screening test is often combined with a VO2max and a lactate threshold test to provide a comprehensive overview of your training status, metabolic flexibility as well as setting key training zones.
